Tuk Tuk Thailand

1. What country and city did you travel to?

Thailand: Stayed in Karon a beach off main market town Patong in Phuket.

2.What time of the year did you travel?

January, “Cool season”- the weather was relatively even throughout the trip with consistent warm temperatures.

3.Where did you stay?

Wonderful “Centara Grand Beach Resort” on Karon beach. This was a massive resort- we each had our own private pools and there was a magnitude of facilities and services available including on-site restaurants.

4. What was your favourite location?

A relatively quiet, but completely picturesque, beach known as “Paradise Beach”. This is a predominately snorkelling beach with wonderful coral and tropical fish. We got a Long Boat to this destination, which added to the overall experience. You can also play beach sports or laze around in the sun at this beach.

5. What was your favourite activity?

Elephant riding! The look and feel of Asian elephants up close is amazing- let alone being privileged enough to spend an hour on their backs. We went to the ‘Siam Safari’ elephant rides. The elephants were treated with kindness and love by their riders.

6. Name a song that framed your trip? Or reminds you of your trip?

There isn’t one but two songs that completely frame this trip
I like the way – Eddy Watta

I know you want me- Pitbull

Both of which were alternatively played all over Thailand- especially the booming Tuk Tuk (taxi) rides. Super fun!

7. List the 5 words you need to know in that country?
  • Hello- Sawa-dee
  • Thank you (women say)- Kob Khun Ka
  • Thank you (men say)- Kob Khun Krab
  • I come from Australia -Pom ma jak pratet Australia (man)/ Chan ma jak pratet Australia (woman)
  • You're welcome - Yin dee krap / ka

8. Words of Warning
Be careful and alert while in the Phuket night markets- There are some dodgey people that try to scam you and some sell completely false items (I know what you’re thinking- everything is dodgy and false because its fake- but I sincerely mean false and broken items).

Also be wary of the cab (Tuk Tuk) drivers- sometimes they try to over charge you. Make sure you ask the driver how much a taxi will cost to your destination first so you don’t get stuck in a yucky situation.

9. List 3 essential clothing items
  •  Tiny polka dot bikini or an alternate e.g. swimmers
  • Thongs- You pretty much live in your thongs in daily activities
  • Beach caftan or beach shirt
10. List 3 essential personal items

  • iPod (and headphones) to listen to while chilling by the pool or beach
  • High protection sunscreen- or for girls – tinted moisturising sunscreen
  • Underwater camera

11. Currency convertor
1 AUD = 31.9 Baht

Mostly everything is cheap. The general rule of thumb when buying was to divide the price by 3 and remove the last numeral to work our roughly what you’re spending.

12. Name one thing that is highly recommended by you -which is also great value for money

Highly recommend is the elephant riding. It was my most enjoyed activity it was traditional and definitely broadened my horizons. The elephants are beautiful.

13. Traditional food that you recommend to try

Go crazy in restaurants and explore. There is nothing in particular that I’d recommend other than Singha beer

14. Something to push your boundaries

Go and see the Simon (pronounced Simone) show in Phuket. This a performance “girl” singing and dancing show – nothing adultery. I spent a lot of my time trying to work out which characters were actually women and which were ‘Lady boys’.

Written for you- by Lauren.

Love,
